8 Things I wish I did as a 1st-time homebuyer

If I could re-do my first-time home-buying experience, I would…

  1. Buy a multi-family property and live in one unit part of it and rent out the other(s)

  2. Call more lenders and compare interest rates

  3. Buy something less expensive

  4. Be more real about the amount I want to pay monthly

  5. Take more time to choose a realtor and vet them more thoroughly (a huge reason we created Docs Housing!)

  6. Ask what loan programs I qualify for

  7. Avoid buying a condo because of the monthly fees. Despite amenities, condo fees are a lot of money

  8. Consider not escrowing taxes and insurance and ask about paying them on my own to avoid additional fees or monies paid to a lender for them to pay on my behalf and maintain the escrow account
